What Does Low GFR and High Creatinine Level Mean

Q: I had my latest blood test last month and it said GFR was 45ml/min and creatinine is 1.5mg/dl. I found many materials about GFR and creatinine which were mostly associated with kidneys. Does low GFR and high creatinine level mean Kidney Disease?

A: thanks for using our web--kidneyservicechina.com. Based on your description, your GFR is really low. The normal range of GFR should >90ml/min. And the creatinine normal range is 0.6~1.2mg/dl.

You are right. Both GFR and creatinine can indicate the condition of your kidneys. GFR, means glomerular filtration rate, which measures how well your kidneys work. GFR 45ml/min means about half kidney function declines. Thereby, you are suggested to take other tests to make the final diagnosis. Because I have no your medical report in hand, I cannot give you the test list based on your condition. If you don’t mind, you can send your medical report to kidneyask@hotmail.com and I will find the test list for you as soon as possible.
Creatinine is the byproduct of muscle activity which should be filtered out by kidneys in normal conditions. This is why High Creatinine Level is the sign of kidney damage.
However, creatinine cannot sets out the sign immediate, once the kidneys are damaged in some cases. In most cases, creatinine level increasing means there are at least 50% kidney function has lost already.
From your case, your creatinine is not as high as it should be, considering your 45% kidney function left. It usually means a good news that your kidney damage may be less than it should be.
You are suggested to take tests and get the final diagnosis as soon as possible. For more information, you can leave a message below. Wish you a good day!
